Bay Of Islands
Three hours north of Auckland the 144 islands which makes up the Bay of Islands has long been a favourite with locals and holiday makers alike. It’s proximity to Auckland makes it an ideal pre or post beach add-on to your New Zealand holiday.
The coastal township of Paihia is one of the main boutique towns which make up the region and has a good choice of hotels on offer. A few minutes’ drive from the town is the Waitangi Treaty House where is 1840 the founding document of New Zealand was signed between the Maori Chiefs and the British Crown. The grounds are open to visitors and you can learn firsthand about the early settlement of the country and the continued impact that Maori culture has played in forming its identity.
A visit to the region would not be complete without a cruise through the island’s passage. The ocean here is alive with marine life and dolphins are often spotted in the sheltered waters. Cruises operated regularly and most will sail through the ‘Hole In the Rock’ at Cape Brett.
