The ‘city of sails’ is New Zealand's most populated city and the major international gateway to the North Island. Most visitors to New Zealand will either end or begin their adventure here. All car hire and motorhome companies will have depots here and there is a good range of accommodation on offer as well as some great touring options.
Leading towards the harbour, Queens Street is the home of Auckland's main shopping area with plenty of restaurants and cafes to be discovered off the many side streets beyond. The city's skyline is dominated by the impressive 328 metre high Sky Tower which becomes Auckland's focal point for the annual New Year celebrations. As well as being home to the city's casino you can also dine at the revolving restaurant, or for the more daring embark on the 192 metre high Skywalk or as with most tall structures in New Zealand there is always the option to Bungee jump off it!
Viaduct Harbour is home to the city’s Maritime Museum as well as a number of restaurants and bars. There are plenty of sailing excursions you can join including dinner cruises and the opportunity to sail on the country’s America Cup racing yacht.
For those staying longer in the city, a visit to neighbouring Waiheke Island is a must. A short 40 minute ferry ride from the city's harbour and you will find yourself on an island paradise with secluded bays and boutique vineyards. Further afield there are hundreds of beaches within the greater Auckland region. From black sand surf beaches to secluded and sheltered bays
