Discover Auckland’s Sky Tower

Sky Tower

Sky TowerAuckland’s Sky Tower is arguably the most recognisable landmark in New Zealand’s largest city. It is the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere at more than 300 metres above the ground. Of course, you can visit the tower and experience some of the best views of the entire Auckland landscape. But there is so much more to this incredible structure that you may not be aware of.

The entire structure is home to the entertainment centre, SKYCITY. At the base of the tower is the massive entertainment complex. This area is home to two luxury hotels, the SKYCITY hotel and the SKYCITY Grand Hotel. Both hotels are premier lodging destinations, with the Grand Hotel being a five-star and the other a four-star.

In addition to the two luxury hotels, the tower houses 20 world-class dining experiences. This wide variety of restaurants gives every visitor of Auckland a great chance to have a memorable meal at the city’s most popular destination. Options include Japanese, Chinese, a steakhouse, oyster bar, a deli, Spanish paella, and more.

After checking into your hotel and having a great meal at one of the many restaurants, head over to the 700 seat theatre for the New Zealand International Comedy Festival or the New Zealand International Film Festival. You also may be lucky to be in Auckland when the theatre hosts a concert.

Finally, if you’re looking for an exciting night out, make sure to hit up the SKYCITY Casino. The massive casino houses over 2,100 gaming machines and 150 table games. It is open 24/7 excluding Christmas, Good Friday, and with limited hours on Anzac Day (national day of remembrance in New Zealand and Australia). If you want to enhance your experience at this luxurious casino, consider becoming a member where you’ll be granted access to exclusive gaming rooms that put you away from the rest of the crowd. You must be 20 years or older to enter the casino.

With all of the amenities that it offers, the Sky Tower is so much more than a tall structure that gives you great views of Auckland and beyond. SKYCITY is truly a city on its own and serves as a great example of the way major tourist attractions can turn their destination into an entertainment mecca. We’ve seen this with 875 Michigan Avenue (formerly the John Hancock Building) in Chicago and The Shard in London.
